Common questions

What does "air-roasted" coffee mean, and how is it different?

Air roasting means we roast our coffee on a fluid-bed roaster, where the beans are lifted and tumbled on a stream of hot air instead of tumbling against the hot metal drum of a traditional roaster. Because the beans never sit against a hot surface, they roast more evenly and the chaff (the papery skin that comes loose during roasting) gets swept away instead of scorching in the drum. The result is a cleaner cup that tastes like the coffee itself — the origin, not the roaster. It's the core of how we roast at Mountain Gap.

How fresh is your coffee, and when is it roasted?

We roast to order in small batches twice a week, so your coffee is roasted right before it ships — not pulled off a shelf where it's been sitting for months. Every bag is stamped with its roast date so you always know exactly how fresh it is. Coffee is at its best in the weeks just after roasting, and we build our schedule around getting it to you inside that window.

How should I store my coffee, and how long does it stay fresh?

Keep your beans in an airtight container somewhere cool, dark, and dry — a cupboard or pantry is perfect. Keep them out of the fridge and freezer, where moisture and odors work against you, and away from heat, light, and air, which are what make coffee go stale. For the best flavor, buy what you'll drink over the next few weeks and grind just before you brew.

Should I buy whole bean or ground?

Whole bean will always give you the best cup, because coffee starts losing flavor and aroma the moment it's ground — grinding fresh, right before you brew, keeps everything intact. If you don't have a grinder yet, ground is a fine place to start; just store it well and use it up a little faster. When in doubt, go whole bean and grind as you go.

How long does it take to process and ship my order?

Because we roast to order in small batches a couple of times a week, your order ships out on the next roast day after you place it — that small wait is what guarantees your coffee is fresh, not warehoused. Once it's roasted and packed, it goes out promptly and travels via standard mail. You'll get a roast-fresh bag with the roast date stamped right on it.

Do you offer returns or refunds?

Because coffee is a fresh consumable, we can't accept returns on unwanted or opened bags — but we absolutely stand behind damaged orders. If your order arrives damaged, email us at contact@mountaingap.coffee within 24 hours of delivery, then return the item within 7 days in its unopened original packaging. We cover return shipping on damaged items, and once we confirm the damage we'll process your refund, replacement, or store credit within 7 business days.

Do you offer espresso?

Yes — alongside our single-origin coffees and small-batch blends, we roast coffee meant for espresso, so you can pull shots at home. If you have questions about which roast suits your setup, reach out at contact@mountaingap.coffee and we're happy to point you in the right direction.

Do you offer a coffee subscription?

We don't offer subscriptions right now — every batch is roasted to order, so we keep things simple and let you reorder whenever you're ready for more. When you're running low, just place a new order and we'll roast a fresh batch for you on our next roast day. It's an easy way to keep roast-fresh coffee coming without locking into a plan.

Do you sell wholesale to cafes, offices, or restaurants?

Yes — we supply fresh-roasted coffee to cafes, coffee shops, offices, restaurants, and grocers who want a consistent, roasted-to-order partner. Whether you need a house blend, single-origin for a pour-over program, or bags for a retail shelf, we can build something that fits. Reach out at contact@mountaingap.coffee or +1-606-309-1808 to talk wholesale and get started.

Where are you located, and can I buy your coffee in person?

Mountain Gap Coffee is roasted in London, Kentucky, where our founder Evan started the company in 2023. The best way to get our coffee is right here on our website, roasted to order and shipped to your door. You can also find us in person at Rock Bottom Soap, our local retail partner.
